Variety
HOPE:
A very high-yielding variety with excellent rust tolerance and excellent quality. It adapts well to humid environments.
It was evaluated for many years during the 1990s and early 2000s, along with Centroamericano and Milenio, but was not initially selected for commercial release. However, some plants remained at the Aquiares farm in Turrialba, Costa Rica, where they performed well under high rainfall and high humidity conditions. Local farmers began requesting the variety, and it is now one of the most sought-after hybrids in Costa Rica.
The story
Aquiares Estate was founded in 1890 when British farmers sought opportunities along Costa Rica's railway system to the Caribbean port of Limón. The farm built its mill, which still represents the quality-oriented approach to washed coffees that only Costa Rica can provide. The farm established relationships with clients in Italy, the United States, England, and Japan, among others, who appreciated and trusted the high-quality product. In 1992, the farm began a project to enable people in the Aquiares community to own their own homes, which, as with many older farms, were owned by the farm itself. Now, 96% of Aquiares employees own their own homes, and most have significantly improved them, making Aquiares a thriving community. Likewise, the company benefits from its connection to every member of the community: their loyalty to Aquiares gives them a sense of pride in our product, ensuring high-quality controls throughout every step of the coffee process. The name, “Aquiares,” comes from the location of the farm, nestled between the Aquiares and Turrialba rivers: “Aquiares” means “land between rivers” in the Huetar indigenous language of Costa Rica.
